While he is still listed as a wide receiver, Flakes has rarely taken snaps on the offensive side of the ball this spring. Instead he, along with fellow wide receivers Adarius Wesley and Justin Wyatt, are trying to bolster the depth chart at safety.
While coaches frequently experiment with position switches in the spring, two things make Flakes’ change unique.
For starters, safety would be the third position the 192-pounder has played at Troy, behind wide receiver and running back. The other nuance is a plan exists to potentially use Flakes on both sides of the ball during the 2017 season.
