Troy safety Tyus steps up as leader against Boise State

That wasn’t what defensive coordinator Vic Koenning liked best about the 6-foot, 212-pound sophomore’s performance.

“He did a great job. I’m so proud of Melvin. … He’s matured,” Koenning said. “I started putting him in with (true freshman and fellow safety) Tyler Murray, so that I had an experienced guy back there.”

Koenning recalled a series where Tyus felt his calls in the secondary weren’t exactly being followed, and the safety from Montgomery didn’t hesitate to “coach up” Murray on the sideline. The coordinator loved it.

“It was like, Holy smokes, an alpha male, finally!” Koenning said.
