None were more impressive than true freshman quarterback Sawyer Smith’s debut. While his first play resulted in a 4-yard loss on a run, he completed his first pass for a 48-yard TD to Hiram Velez.
“It was a play I had been running all week. I had a package for the beginning of the game of like five plays,” Smith, a Tate (Fla.) High product, said. “I repped it probably 50 or so times this week. (Velez) got a good break on it, and I let it go. It worked out perfect for us.”
Smith finished a perfect 7-of-7 passing for 86 yards and the touchdown.
