TROY – Troy football head coach Neal Brown named junior Kaleb Barker as the starting quarterback for Saturday’s season opener against No. 22 Boise State.
Barker edged redshirt sophomore Sawyer Smith in a battle to replace four-year starter Brandon Silvers.
“I don’t feel like Sawyer lost the job. I always feel like someone won the job and Kaleb won the job,” Brown said Monday. “He won the job from a production standpoint, the ability to make plays with his feet and from an efficiency standpoint in the passing game.
“I have a lot of confidence in Sawyer and I think our team does, too.
