In 2015, the NCAA began allowing colleges to offer the stipends to help athletes cover everyday living expenses not addressed by athletic scholarships. Athletics director Jeremy McClain said a maximum stipend at Troy will be $3,000 per year, split into four checks (two per semester).
McClain said implementing the stipends has been a high priority for him and his staff since he arrived in August.
“We felt it was important for a lot of reasons,” McClain said. “No. 1, it’s an opportunity to assist our student-athletes, and then secondly from a recruiting standpoint -- we want to make sure we put our best foot forward and giving our coaches a chance to be successful.
