New Troy men’s head basketball coach Scott Cross was about two weeks on the job and was finishing up his time as a TCU assistant when he got a phone call.
It was his boss, Troy AD Jeremy McClain, with news of his resignation and hiring as the AD at Southern Mississippi.
“He was like, ‘Coach, I’ve got something to tell you. It’s the hardest conversation I think I’ve ever had in my life,’” Cross recalled McClain saying Tuesday before the Trojan Tour event in Dothan at Buffalo Wild Wings.
Those kinds of conversations can be unnerving for any head coach, let alone one who has been on the job for less than a month.
