To help learn the finer points of tackling, the Trojans program has invested in a device called a “Fisher Tackle Wheel,” which was developed by the Rogers Athletic Company. The bright orange wheels Troy uses are 42 inches in diameter with a 24-inch middle gap, leaving a 9-inch foam target on each side for players to hit.
Troy linebackers coach and assistant head coach Jon Sumrall said the wheel helps the Trojans with a variety of aspects in roll tackling where players will grasp an opponent’s leg and roll them over in order to bring them down.
“It’s to help you with the roll tackle basically – on certain angles of tackles and just getting your arm through and head across,” he said.
