Cross, an assistant coach at TCU this season, spent 12 years as head coach at Texas-Arlington and is the Mavericks’ all-time winningest coach.
Cross, 44, certainly checks a lot of boxes that Troy athletics director Jeremy McClain listed when asked what he was looking for in a candidate.
“We’d love to have somebody who has run a program and understands what it takes as a head coach to hit the ground running,” McClain said in an interview last week. “… I think you need somebody who understands our league, understands resource-wise what we’re doing.
“I think we’ve got really good resources, especially from a Sun Belt perspective, but somebody needs to have an understanding of what that is.
