Almost all eyes are on Sawyer Smith, Troy’s new starting quarterback in the wake of Kaleb Barker’s season-ending knee injury.
Smith and the Trojans (5-1) look for a sixth consecutive victory with Saturday’s trip to Lynchburg, Va., and a non-conference game against the Liberty Flames (2-3).
Trojans defensive coordinator Vic Koenning is wary of the Flames’ high-octane offense, which has twice scored 52 points in victories and put up 41 in a 49-41 loss last week at New Mexico State.
“We’ve got to sack quarterbacks and we’ve got to cover passes and if we can’t do that, we’re fixing to play 487 a game (Liberty’s average yards) – one of the most prolific offenses in the country,” Koenning said this week.
