TROY – Jabir Daughtry-Frye was having a memorable freshman campaign in 2016 until one jarring hit changed the course of his career.
“It’s crazy because I didn’t even feel anything,” the 5-foot-7 redshirt sophomore running back/kick returner said Thursday. “I just thought I got dead-legged.”
In Troy’s first game as a ranked team in FBS history, Daughtry-Frye attempted to turn the left corner on a carry early in the game. An Arkansas State defender making the tackle hit him directly in the knee, tearing Daughtry-Frye’s anterior cruciate ligament and ending his season.
Gone were the opportunities to add to his already impressive freshman year, which featured a 66-yard touchdown run against eventual national champion Clemson, a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against New Mexico State and a blocked punt against those same Aggies that led to another special teams score.
