Family Ties: Coach-catcher, father-son, Smartts bond through baseball

TROY – Father’s Day finds Chase Smartt in a really unusual environment. He’s home.

Troy University’s starting catcher, a rising senior, can’t remember spending Father’s Day in Troy since he was a little boy. His father, Troy head baseball coach Mark Smartt, guessed Chase was 10 or 11 the last time they were together in Troy on this day that recognizes dads everywhere.

“We’ve been together on Father’s Day, not every year but numerous times – but when he was playing somewhere,” Mark said. “This certainly will be the first one in a long time without a direct baseball on-field attachment.
