Behind Frye, Troy enjoys ‘special’ win

TROY — Freshman Jabir Frye’s highlight reel made the tour down the Troy football roster well before he arrived on campus.

Though quickly recognized for being short in stature, hence his “Small Frye” nickname, the running back enticed the Trojans in many other ways.

“We knew then,” receiver Emanuel Thompson said. “I told him, ‘You’re going to own special teams.’”

Frye had a hand in two special-teams touchdowns, including his 100-yard kickoff return, to highlight Troy’s 52-6 win over New Mexico State on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

He blocked a second-quarter punt that Demetrius Cain returned for a touchdown before opening the second half with his electrifying return.
