Sawyer Smith understands he has an important role to play in the Troy offense.
At 6-foot-3, 219 pounds, Troy’s backup quarterback is being called on mostly for his running ability.
His 57-yard run to the Nebraska 23 midway through the second quarter Saturday set up a score that pushed the Trojans’ lead to 17-0 during a 24-19 road victory.
“I think it was more them respecting the running backs over me, which is reasonable,” Smith said of the run. “The defensive end crashed down, and I kind of saw a gap and took it. It was a big play.
