Tottenham's hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout stages took a huge blow after Kevin Kampl's strike against the run-of-play sealed a narrow victory for Bayer Leverkusen at Wembley.
In a frenetic opening half, former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez missed a glorious chance to open the scoring for the German side but he somehow dragged his effort wide of Hugo Lloris' goal.
Spurs looked the more likely of the two teams to break the deadlock and were knocking on the door before Kampl was left unmarked in the Tottenham penalty area to latch onto the loose ball and slot home from close-range.
