Tottenham were on the verge of landing Diego Maradona in the early 1990s before manager Ossie Ardiles pulled the plug on the deal, former striker Teddy Sherringham has revealed.
Ardiles had an ill-fated spell in charge at White Hart Lane between June 1993 and November 1994. The Argentine made 238 league appearances for Spurs before taking over from Doug Livermore.
Maradona had inspired Argentina to the World Cup in 1986 and was plying his trade in his homeland for Newell's Old Boys when his compatriot came calling.
Ardiles approached Sherringham unsure whether to pursue the skillful forward - a conversation which stunned the then Tottenham captain.
