It feels inconceivable that one of Alan Shearer’s records will not be broken on Boxing Day and Harry Kane is already dreaming of a far bigger prize.
Kane’s hat-trick at Burnley equalled Shearer’s 36-goal haul accumulated in 1995; one more against Southampton this lunchtime would cap the finest year of his fine career rather nicely.
But then there is also the all-time Premier League record of 260, set by Shearer, that Kane - himself on 93 - is not shying away from talking about.

‘Of course you dream about it,’ he said.
