There were two empty seats on the Tottenham coach as it rolled out of San Siro on Tuesday night, en route to the airport and an overnight flight back to north London.

Oliver Skipp and Pape Matar Sarr, the young pair tasked with anchoring Spurs' midfield in their Champions League clash with AC Milan, had been left at the ground.

They had one more job to do. The problem? Neither had anything left to give.
