Bayer Leverkusen sent a record-Tottenham crowd at Wembley Stadium home in defeat, beating Spurs 1-0 in their Champions League Group E match.
Kevin Kampl scored from close range after a deflected shot fell right to his feet in front of the goal in the 65th minute for the only goal of the match.
Tottenham were twice badly caught out trying to play the ball from the back in the first half, and were fortunate that Kyle Walker's turnover did not end up as a goal, Javier Hernandez firing just wide of the post for Bayer.
Spurs' most dangerous moment of the opening 45 minutes came from a solo effort from Christian Eriksen, but the Denmark international's well-hit shot went right at Bayer goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
