£55,000-a-week England footballer Aaron Lennon is detained under Mental Health Act after stand-off with police next to a busy road

England footballer Aaron Lennon has been detained over mental health concerns after police talked him away from the side of a busy road.

The Everton winger, 30, was taken away for mental assessment after the 20-minute stand-off with police on Sunday afternoon.

Lennon, who has not played for the club since February is now in hospital receiving treatment for 'a stress-related illness,' an Everton spokesman said.

Lennon, capped 21 times for England, signed to Everton from Tottenham Hotspurs for £4million in 2015 but has fallen out of favour in the last few months.
