The NBA and vaccines: What are the rules across the league and how are the Raptors affected?

The Raptors got the jab they were waiting on, but the implications of who has and who hasn’t been vaccinated against COVID-19 still reverberate across the NBA.

Toronto announced Wednesday that the second dose the Raptors needed to be a fully vaccinated organization by the season opener on Oct. 20 has been administered.

That won’t be the case for every NBA organization. Some players, like Kyrie Irving of the championship favourite Brooklyn Nets, may have to sit out some games because of a refusal to get vaccinated.

While the league has not issued a vaccine mandate to its players, some jurisdictions — Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco — have imposed sweeping COVID-19 vaccine mandates that will affect their hometown NBA teams.
