Raptors’ Sullinger to have surgery on foot, could miss quarter of season

The Toronto Raptors will be without their starting power forward for a prolonged stretch to start the NBA season.

Jared Sullinger will undergo surgery on Monday and will have a screw inserted into the fifth metatarsal in his right foot. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Martin O’Malley in New York City, a Raptors press release said.

The team said that the surgery is a preventative measure to alleviate symptomatic stress reactions.

Sullinger injured his foot in the Raptors’ first pre-season game and sat out the team’s other six preseason dates. He worked out in Washington on Thursday, Raptors coach Dwane Casey said before the team’s game against the Wizards on Friday.
