The announcement of the Toronto Raptors signing of Greg Monroe has been greeted by Dinos fans with a collective yawn. I find myself joining the suddenly sleepy.
The veteran front court man’s name has been floating around for weeks now. I’m sure Monroe was getting somewhat desperate to find a team who wanted him. He played for the Bucks, Suns and Celtics – last season. He’s a microcosm of the astonishing decline in value of low-post players, as summed up by this tweet:
This summer, centers DeMarcus Cousins, Brook Lopez, Nerlens Noel, Greg Monroe and JaVale McGee have signed for a combined total of:
$17 millionIn 2016, Timofey Mozgov, Joakim Noah, Ian Mahinmi, Meyers Leonard, Bismack Biyombo & Miles Plumlee signed for a total of:
$365 million— Tommy Beer (@TommyBeer) August 6, 2018
I’ve been writing about the crying need for help up front, so I’m happy we’ve got somebody.
