Raptors helping basketball make inroads in Montreal, where hockey is king

MONTREAL—Khem Birch understands who he is and what he represents. As he took to the Bell Centre court here Friday night for the first time as a professional basketball player, he did so full of pride.

“It’s cool,” Birch said hours before the Raptors finished their exhibition season with a game against the Boston Celtics.

“I’m gonna treat it as a regular game but I’m just happy for a kid that’s from here that’s going to see me play … and then they’re going to be inspired, that’s the one thing I’m looking forward to.
