Kobe Bryant stepped down from the platform, and he stopped. We shook hands, and he wanted to say something. “That’s a very good question, man. That’s a very good question. That’s the question.” He stayed there. He had something else to say.

Kobe Bryant played his final game in Toronto on Monday night, absent perhaps the all-star game as a token goodbye, and he delivered an utterly respectable performance. He made half his shots for the first time in 11 months, and when told this he barked out happily, “Oh, really? 50 per cent. Oh, man. Finally.”

The crowd chanted his name when he was on the bench, chanting “We Want Ko-be!
