As has been obvious to everyone watching the Toronto Maple Leafs this year, Ron Hainsey is a terrible 5v5 player at this point in his career. He is too slow and easily beaten off the rush. His passing is bad. His breakouts are worse.
Hainsey has had a great career, and he’s good enough on the PK to maintain his lineup spot, but he cannot continue on in the role of top-pairing defenseman. Personally, I’d like to see the Leafs pair Jake Gardiner and Morgan Rielly, as they have a combined time as a pairing of roughly one full season over their careers and have always been amazing together.
