In his first draft as the new GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kyle Dubas did the expected and passed on picking 25th.
The Leafs made a draft-floor trade by sending the 25th pick to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for picks #29 and #76. The Leafs clearly felt the player they wanted would still be on the board at 29, and so they were able to add an additional prospect to the franchise.
A similar move was pulled off in 2015 when Dubas was the co-GM with Mark Hunter. The Leafs traded down from 24 to 29, and got a bonus pick at 61.
