Instead of signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Brian Boyle will sign a two-year deal with the New Jersey Devils.
The Leafs were rumoured to be interested in bringing Boyle back to centre the fourth line, but perhaps they were weary of overpaying.
The Leafs traded Byron Froese and a second round pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning at the trade deadline for Boyle.
Boyle immediately stabilized the fourth line and clicked with Kasperi Kapanen and Matt Martin to form an effective trio.
While the price to acquire Boyle for only a few months may seem high, consider that it almost certainly was that trade that got the Leafs into the Playoffs.
