James Reimer wasn’t traded because of the return value, it was a calculated move to lose games. That’s evident by Alex Stalock mutually agreeing to go home.
That turns the James Reimer to San Jose deal into a condtional 4th round pick (3rd if the Sharks make the Cup Finals this year) in 2018. Ben Smith and Stalock both become UFA’s this year and will not be back with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The fact that he (Stalock) mutually agreed to leave indicates there was never anything there. Why would you trade one of the best 5v5 goalies in the NHL this season for a conditional 4th round pick?
