Dion Phaneuf is a free agent and the Toronto Maple Leafs need better depth on defence. Kyle Dubas should be reaching out to his agent and negotiating bringing him back to the blue and white.
Phaneuf’s time with the Leafs was always clouded by the contract he was given ahead of the 2014-15 season. General manager Brian Burke brought the defenceman to Toronto and his contract was extended by Dave Nonis. Phaneuf signed a seven-year deal worth $49 million.
That worked out to a $7 million AAV. Whether fair or not, Phaneuf’s play in Toronto was often compared to his cap hit by media and fans.
