Morgan Rielly finished off a 2-on-1 with John Tavares in overtime to clinch a 5-4 victory for the Leafs in their opening night game against the Montreal Canadiens.
William Nylander had a strong outing, scoring two goals and adding an assist. Tavares finished with a goal and two assists, and newcomer Jimmy Vesey had the game-tying goal midway through the third period, courtesy of a lucky bounce off one of the referees.
Goaltender Frederik Andersen struggled at times during regulation, particularly on the Habs’ go-ahead goal early in the third period. But Andersen saved his best stops for the overtime session to give his team the chance to gain the extra point.
