The retirement of Bob Cole booth has made Canadians, especially Newfoundlanders, a little sadder; our collective Saturday nights a little emptier.
On Saturday night, Cole’s Hockey Hall of Fame career came to a conclusion after a half-century of mesmerizing viewers and listeners with his perfect intonations and voice inflections.
The inconsequential matchup between the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs drew to a 5-5 stalemate after regulation. Cole, masterful to the final siren, called the ensuing overtime and shootout flawlessly. In the process the legendary broadcaster unwittingly helped savour the magical night for Habs call-up Ryan Poehling.
