The Maple Leafs were outclassed on home ice, falling 7-3 to the defending Presidents’ Trophy winners the Tampa Bay Lightning. Brayden Point had two goals and an assist in his season debut after missing his team’s first three games of the season while recovering from hip surgery.
The Good
- The line of Auston Matthews, Andreas Johnsson and William Nylander was Toronto’s best forward unit of the evening. Johnsson got the Leafs on the board with a power play goal and Matthews netted his sixth goal of the season.
- John Tavares registered his first goal of the year on a deflection.
