The Leafs visited the Washington Capitals, who are the defending Stanley Cup Champions, and came out with a 4-2 victory Saturday evening.
It wasn’t an easy task. Washington’s potent offense were fighting for the puck all around Leafs goaltender Freddie Andersen’s net, but just weren’t able to score more than a pair.
Kasperi Kapanen, Par Lindholm (his first NHL goal), Auston Mattews and Josh Leivo scored for the Leafs. Andersen stopped 25 shots to earn the victory.
With his goal, Matthews became the fifth player in the modern era (since 1943-44) to record at least 10 goals in his team’s first six games of the season.
