Leafs hit rock bottom in loss to David Ayres, emergency backup goalie

In the annals of Leafs history, certain words and phrases have evoked the worst memories of the team’s half-century-plus run of Stanley Cup futility.

Incredibly, and inexplicably, a sellout crowd at Scotiabank Arena watched the home team lose to 42-year-old David Ayres, the emergency backup goaltender who was called int to strap on the pads at 11:19 of the second period after both Carolina goaltenders – James Reimer and Petr Mrazek – left the game with injuries.
