The Maple Leafs have a crowded depth chart on the wings, especially if we assume Joffrey Lupul and Milan Michalek are both starting the season on the big club, which suggests there’s a strong possibility that Leivo has to pass through waivers to join the Marlies.
Between the extra year and the guaranteed NHL salary, the structure of the contract is such that the Leafs may be trying to waiver proof it as much as they can.
