In a press release Sunday, the Canadian Women’s Hockey League announced that it will cease operations as of May 1.

“Unfortunately, while the on-ice hockey is exceptional, the business model has proven to be economically unsustainable,” the release said.
The announcement comes just seven days after Calgary defeated Montreal to win the 2018-19 Clarkson Cup before a television audience of 175,000.
