With the NHL trade deadline just a few days away and the Maple Leafs linked to almost every available player - here are three trades that should be considered.
1. Trade Luke Schenn and Clarke MacArthur to Los Angeles for Dustin Brown and Dustin Penner. LA replaces the recently traded Jack Johnson with another young defenseman, and MacArthur would provide the Kings with additional secondary scoring. Toronto would acquire a desperately needed power forward in Brown, while the 6’4, 245lb Penner would add some much needed size up front.
2. If they are unable to re-sign Mikhail Grabovski, they could expect a late first round pick from a contending club in a deadline deal, which could very well be a team like the Nashville Predators. Nashville has a very good team this season and this may be the year to go for it with key players Shea Weber (set to become a restricted free agent) and Ryan Suter an unrestricted free agent after this season.
3. Send Mike Komisarek and a second round pick to the Edmonton Oliers for Nikolai Khabibulin. Khabibulin would help Toronto’s goaltending and could be a solid mentor for James Reimer or Jonas Gustavsson. Edmonton is rewarded with a second round pick for taking on Komisarek. Considering the Maple Leafs’ recent struggles, the pick could be fairly high.
Although none of these trades would put the Maple Leafs over the top, they would help solve some of their needs this season and would set them up nicely moving forward.
