SEATTLE—It was in the wake of back-to-back appearances in the MLS Cup final in 2016 and 2017, with a victory in the latter, that talk around Toronto FC started to change.
A couple of trophies wasn’t going to be enough for the boys in red. One winning season wasn’t satisfying. The group became bullish about doing more, being more. Words like “dynasty” and “legacy” were batted around, conversations that started in private amongst players and staff and eventually crept into the public realm.
The once-maligned club had turned its fate and won 10 trophies to that point — six Canadian championships, two Eastern Conference crowns, one Supporters’ Shield and that MLS Cup.
