There was a dinner this evening up at the Kia Training Grounds ahead of tomorrow's match against the Montreal Impact at BMO Field.
A group of old friends, teammates really, got together to celebrate, to commemorate, a special event in Canadian soccer history.
The year was 1976, the old NASL was in it's heyday – Pele had signed for the New York Cosmos the year before, ushering in a flood of global stars – and Wings and Elton John topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles list. What a grand time to be alive.
But it was a plucky group of upstarts from Toronto, who, were it not for a collection in a church basement, may not have even existed, that lifted the trophy on August 28 in Seattle's Kingdome, having beaten the Minnesota Kicks 3-0 in the final.
