It was back in August that Wayne Rooney announced his time in Major League Soccer would be coming to a premature end, with plans to return to his native England after this season — and Toronto FC could be his final opponent.
Rooney’s D.C. United visit BMO Field on Saturday to open the post-season in the first of four one-and-done rounds on the revamped road to the MLS Cup. The 33-year-old Rooney signed a 31/2 year deal after leaving Everton of the English Premier League in the summer of 2018, but will head for second-tier Derby County as a player/coach in January, less than a year and a half after the move overseas.
