Toronto FC suffered the cruelest of heartbreaks in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final in Mexico, winning Wednesday night’s game but losing the championship in a penalty shootout.
The Reds led 2-1 over Chivas de Guadalajara after 90 minutes, making the series 3-3 on aggregate, but TFC lost 4-2 in the shootout after misses from Jonathan Osorio — the tournament’s top scorer — and Michael Bradley.
The win extends Mexico’s unbeaten streak in the tournament to 10 years — every iteration of the modern era.
Injuries to five of Toronto’s defenders — Drew Moor (quadriceps), Chris Mavinga (hamstring), Eriq Zavaleta (quadriceps), Nick Hagglund (hamstring) and Justin Morrow (calf) — forced a new-look starting 11 from coach Greg Vanney.
