TORONTO, Canada—Toronto FC announced its year-end roster moves today to conclude the 2020 season.
After being eliminated in the first round of the MLS Cup Playoffs, The Reds had up until 1 p.m. EST today (Monday) to accept club-options and tender bona fide contract offers to their upcoming 2021 free agents—and several key decisions had to be made.
Most notably, of course, was the decision surrounding Pablo Piatti, the club’s 2020 designated player signing, and whether or not the Reds should exercise their club option on the Argentine winger’s deal.
“The Designated Player Rule allows clubs to acquire up to three players whose total compensation and acquisition costs exceed the maximum budget charge, with the club bearing financial responsibility for the amount of compensation above each player’s budget charge.
