Some fans booed, chanted “U-S-A” and threw objects on the field as players from FC Dallas and Nashville SC knelt during the American national anthem ahead of a Major League Soccer match in Texas this month, a demonstration meant to call attention to equity, systemic racism and violence against Black people.
Justin Morrow was not surprised.
Nor was the veteran Toronto FC defender, 32, surprised to learn that FC Dallas defender Reggie Cannon was on the receiving end of racist comments and death threats after calling the behaviour of those fans “disgusting” in his post-match interview.
