Jozy Altidore, one of the most beloved and effective players in Toronto FC history, officially broke with the club on Monday.
The 32-year-old striker, who posted a goodbye to the team he has represented for more than seven years on Instagram on Friday, is now a member of reigning Supporters’ Shield holders New England Revolution. He signed with Toronto’s Eastern Conference rival as a free agent, on a deal through 2024, after the Reds exercised its one off-season buyout of a guaranteed contract on Altidore’s existing deal.
The so-called buyout means Altidore’s salary will not count against the club’s budget and he is no longer a Reds designated player, but it must still complete a financial obligation to the player in 2022 and 2023.
