Toronto FC designated player Alejandro Pozuelo is following in the footsteps of former Reds star Sebastian Giovinco. The Spanish playmaker was named one of the three finalists for Major League Soccer’s newcomer of the year award Monday.
Giovinco won the newcomer award in 2015, the same year he won league MVP honours.
Pozuelo, 28, signed with the Reds on March 4, filling one of the designated player spots that had been filled by Giovinco before he joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal FC. The Reds were counting on Pozuelo to provide the type of creativity they had seen with Giovinco and midfielder Victor Vazquez, now with the Qatar-based club Umm Salal.
