TFC acquires goalie Clint Irwin from Colorado

Toronto FC took a first step toward fixing its problem between the pipes Monday, acquiring goalkeeper Clint Irwin from the Colorado Rapids.

The Reds were seemingly without a starting goalkeeper before acquiring the Charlotte, N.C., native, 26, after declining the options on both Chris Konopka and Joe Bendik’s contracts last year.

Bendik has since moved to Orlando City SC. Toronto still holds the rights to Konopka, and could re-sign him for less money.

“Improving our defence has been a stated priority for our club this off-season. Bringing in Clint helps to solidify our defensive group, and with Clint on board we are confident in our collection of goalkeepers across the first team and TFC2,” Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a release.
