The first time Greg Vanney walked out as head coach of Toronto FC back in March 2014, a fan greeted him with the kind of hazing you might expect as the newbie boss of an oft-maligned club whose fans had learned not to get too attached to its personnel.
“They yelled out, ‘Hey Vanney, I hope you’re renting,’ ” Vanney recalled Tuesday. “That was, I think, the first voice I heard in my stretch as a coach at TFC. And I remember thinking, ‘I am renting, but I’m going to be renting for a long time.
