In the story of Toronto FC’s season so far, one central antagonist has emerged: the referees.
There was the missed handball just before New York City FC striker David Villa’s goal in the Reds’ second game; the possible foul against defender Justin Morrow leading up to Sporting Kansas City’s winner in the third game; and the early red card for Toronto’s own Benoit Cheyrou last weekend in Denver.
The string of dubious calls against TFC makes it difficult to get a proper feel for this year’s club and takes away talk about the team’s actual performances.
