Toronto FC announced this afternoon that they’ve officially dropped defender Gregory van der Wiel from the roster, parting ways “by mutual consent” according to a press release. The exact nature of this move is unclear although it’d be safe to assume it’s some kind of contract buyout.
Due to the complexity of MLS’s cap rules, it’s hard to say how exactly this will affect TFC’s salary cap situation. Apparently, the cost of a buyout will count against the cap if it’s done during the season (which this was), although how that would work with a TAM-level player like van der Wiel (whose cap hit of $150,000 was well below his actual salary) I cannot say.
