The New York Yankees called up outfielder Slade Heathcott from triple-A on Wednesday to take the roster spot from Jacoby Ellsbury, who went on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee sprain.
The Yankees lost more than a game Tuesday night, losing their leadoff man when Ellsbury tweaked his knee swinging at a pitch in the fourth inning against the Washington Nationals.
In the top of the fourth, Ellsbury walked and then took second on a groundout. While at second, he was checked out by manager Joe Girardi and medical personnel. Ellsbury remained in the game and ended up scoring.
